To the Penny

Just in case you didn't see or hear about this out there in the "mainstream"...We The People passed a millstone on October 31st.

I know milestone is more correct, but "millstone tied around our necks" is more like it...Talk about Happy Halloween....
The TOTAL U.S. PUBLIC DEBT exceeded eight million, million dollars for the first time ever. This big a number, $8,027,123,404,214 might be easier shown as,
$26, 975 owed by EVERY person in the country
$56,299 owed by EVERY Employed Civilian Worker

Add in CONSUMER (PRIVATE) DEBT...and it's an additional,
$7,233 owed by EVERY person
$15,095 owed by EVERY employed worker

But just remember, GDP is up & growing strong!! Sleep tight & keep spending.

I almost never agree with Ann Coulter's opinions. Even less frequently do I think her usual exaggerated language is appropriate to her subject.

Nevertheless, I've got to agree with her judgment that the Miers nomination was absurd. Miers was thoroughly underqualified for a position on the Supreme Court. At least Alito has demonstrated the chops for the job.

After pointing out objections to Miers' record, however, Coulter's pen gets the better of her.

> We've been waiting 30 years to end the lunacy
> of nine demigods on the Supreme Court deciding
> every burning social issue of the day for us,
> loyal subjects in a judicial theocracy.

Let's leave aside questions of accuracy for the moment, and focus on the language. "Lunacy"? "Demigods"? "Judicial theocracy"? Isn't this a *little* overheated? What has been gained by describing the problem in such absurdly extreme terms? What citizen has been convinced of the dangers of judicial activism that didn't already agree with her?

By inflaming instead of informing, Coulter damages her argument and makes it more difficult to have a open exchange of ideas. Sure, let's have a discussion about the role the Supreme Court should play in American government and society; let's have a discussion about the place that "common sense" and equity should (or should not) have in judicial decisions. But, *please*, let's make it a discussion among principled, intelligent adults who care about their country. Let's not merely puff and blow.

Apologies. I attatched my comment to the wrong post. This clearly should go with the Coulter post of 10/22/2005.

You're right on Gerry!

Most of the problems going on-- political, social, family, etc.--have developed from *single issue* arguments from either the right or left. This focus on "one" topic escalates the anger, language & closes minds.

If we can't have reasoned, informed discourse, then we can't change minds thru logic...the entire society devolves into a "ME vs. YOU" conflict, the "majority" wins & WE all lose.
